'The Grind' refers to anything that you have to play for hours and hours and hours on end to see any kind of advancement.

The only 'grind' I've found is...

1) Exploring every corner of every place.

2) Completing missions and quests and exploration solo.

Some people say there's a grind to get money, but the farthest I'm at is Lion's Arch and I have 30 platinum.

Grind. Something every other MMORPG wants you to do to hit lvl 99 or whatever their max is. I maxed my guy's armor and levels in barely 2-3 weeks at 1-3 hours a day. I LIKE that kind of 'grind'.

You want to hit maximum level? PLAY, don't grind ^_^

Pretty much.

My style of play, since this is my first time through, is to explore EVERYWHERE so that I don't miss anything. I pick up EVERYTHING. When I run out of room, I drop the plain stuff and pick up any unidentifieds.

I actually have 37 plat because I gave 7 plat to my guild to help get a hall.

I don't buy anything because I find what I need and I haven't needed to spend an exhorbitant amount of money on armor.

Oh, and I solo too. It can be rough sometimes, because it'll take me all day to clear an area but the rewards are great.

Generally, in the context of the flamewars here, "grind" is taken to refer to unlocking weapon upgrades, runes, and elite skills. I'll try to give a relatively NPOV summary.

Certain important elite skills spawn on bosses that are randomly generated out of a rotation, so at times to acquire that skill require clearing a certain explorable area multiple times to check if that boss has spawned, and then getting the boss to use the skill to SoC it, which may be nontrivial.

Weapon upgrades and runes are also somewhat time-consuming to get, because they drop rather rarely, and thus to unlock a full set might require going through certain areas with above-average drop rates for the relevant items repeatedly, and in general repeating a great deal of PvE content for the drops.

The major bone of contention here is whether or not it is a "requirement" for PvP players to "grind" for those items and skills. On one hand, some have argued that many builds are improved significantly by the addition of the proper elite skill. Superior runes are also claimed to allow much greater effectiveness (as a concrete example, against AL 60, 4 air eles using lightning orb at level 16 air magic burst at 560ish damage, while against the same AL those 4 air eles at level 12 burst at 420ish damage ??? the first is close to a guaranteed one-shot kill, while the latter is generally not close to that on targets with full health).

On the other side of the argument, it is claimed that these added bonuses generally provide relatively little benefit, and that they serve as a crutch for poor play, and that the proper application of skill can be used to defeat a superior team, and that people going through the "grind" for PvP are purposefully making the game unenjoyable for themselves.
